Welcome to the Care for Kids North Devon Summer newsletter.

The school summer holidays are upon us and we’re reflecting on a very busy few months, with lots still to look forward to in the coming year!

Already since April we’ve raised over £12,000 for our small charity, with the help of our fantastic volunteers and the support of local businesses. Every family we help needs between £800 and £1,300 of financial support and we can only provide this through our fundraising efforts.

This is our 10th anniversary year, so we’re hoping to raise more than we’ve ever raised in a single year! Can you help us achieve this goal by taking on a sponsored challenge or holding a fundraising event on our behalf? Perhaps you know of, or work for a local business that’s looking for a charity to sponsor? Get in touch if you can help!

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Torridge scores at charity football match

The two teams who took part in the charity match

The North Devon Derby in April was a fantastic success, raising over £863.42 through tickets sales and charity raffle.

It was a close match, but Torridge District Council were crowned the winners, scoring 3-0 against North Devon Council.

If you didn’t manage to catch the action, we’re hoping this will be an annual fixture so look out for the re-match some time next year. We’re sure NDC will be out for a win next time.

Jacky took on a 1,000 mile challenge

Jacky on her bike at Lands End

Our Charity Manager, Jacky Massos, took on an epic challenge in May. She cycled from Lands End in Cornwall to John ‘O’ Groats in Scotland – that’s 1,000 miles in 14 days!

As it’s the charity’s 10th anniversary year, Jacky wanted to take on something massive and she smashed it!

Jacky joined 16 like-minded strangers and saddled up for the long journey north.

Jacky’s journey was a great personal achievement, as well as a brilliant fundraising feat for Care for Kids North Devon.

Through kind sponsorship from friends and family, Jacky raised £1,065 (£1,278.75 with Gift Aid included)!

If you’re inspired by Jacky’s story, why not take on a challenge yourself? Head to our website for ideas.

Care for Kids 10k – biggest and best yet

Two runners crossing the finish line

The Barnstaple 10k 2019 on 7 July was a huge success. 400 runners signed up to take part and the event raised over £8,000 for Care for Kids North Devon.

Massive thanks to all our runners and supporters, in particular our headline and primary sponsors Brewer Harding & Rowe, Molevalley Farmers and TT Electronics.

Team Torridge who won the team award

This year we tried to tackle single-use plastics by supplying biodegradable paper cups and asking runners to bring their own, refillable water bottles.
We can’t wait to put on another great event next year and are already thinking about how to make it even bigger and better!

Here’s what’s coming up next:

good luck message

4th August 2019

Our Care for Kids Prudential Ride London cyclists for 2019 are Craig Jackson and Steve Pepper.

This 100 mile route will see around 25,000 amateur cyclists take on a cycling challenge like no other through London and Surrey.

Good luck Craig and Steve!

Great North Run 2018

Our next project at NDDH

Digital art wall at NDDH

Improvements to Caroline Thorpe ward at NDDH

Our project this year was to brighten up the playroom at Caroline Thorpe ward at NDDH. This beautiful digital art project is now complete and we’re turning our sights to our next project.

We’re working towards the refurbishment of another isolation treatment room at the children’s ward (cubicle 4).

Feedback from the patients and families using cubicle 5 (which we refurbished last year) has been very positive and we hope to make cubicle 4 just as good. Watch this space!

And finally, thanks to…

Our recent fundraising stars:

  • Angela Walters who ran for us in the London marathon (her 20th marathon!)
  • JC Fundraising who chose us as their charity of the year and raised £520
  • All those who helped with our quiz and carvery at Park Hotel, raising £430
  • Our volunteer Migs who hosted a bubbles and bubbly night, raising £525
  • Our bucket collection volunteers, who collected £145 at ASDA

Without your amazing efforts, we wouldn’t be able to support so many families in North Devon. Keep up the good work everyone!
